BARIATRIC SURGERY

What is Bariatric Surgery?

Bariatric surgery refers to all surgical methods applied for the treatment of morbid obesity (BMI 40 and above, or BMI 35 and above with comorbidities) when diet and exercise prove insufficient. Sleeve gastrectomy, gastric bypass, and gastric balloon are the most commonly performed procedures.

In our bariatric surgery operations performed in Istanbul at Million Hair Clinic, we use laparoscopic (closed) surgical techniques. This method provides significantly less pain, shorter hospital stays, and faster recovery compared to open surgery.

At our clinic, bariatric surgery is managed by a multidisciplinary team (surgeon, dietitian, psychologist, endocrinologist). Sustainable results are targeted through comprehensive pre-operative evaluation and a lifelong post-operative follow-up program.

PROCEDURE STEPS

How is Bariatric Surgery Performed?

Bariatric surgery at our clinic is safely applied with a multidisciplinary team approach.

Comprehensive Evaluation
1

Comprehensive Evaluation

BMI is calculated, blood tests, cardiology examination, endoscopy, and psychological evaluation are performed. The appropriate surgical method is determined.

Pre-Operation Preparation
2

Pre-Operation Preparation

A 2–4 week diet program is implemented. The liver is reduced in size and operative risks are minimized.

Laparoscopic Surgery
3

Laparoscopic Surgery

The operation is performed laparoscopically under general anesthesia. It is carried out through 3–5 small incisions. The operation takes 45–90 minutes.

Follow-up Program
4

Follow-up Program

Sustainable weight loss is achieved through a dietitian-guided nutrition program, regular check-ups, and psychological support.

Lifetime Follow-up

Bariatric surgery is a beginning, not an end. A lifelong post-operative follow-up program is implemented at our clinic. Monthly check-ups are conducted during the first year, and annual check-ups in subsequent years. Healthy lifestyle habits are made permanent with the support of a dietitian, psychologist, and surgeon.

3 EFFECTIVE METHODS

Bariatric Surgery Our Methods

1. Sleeve Gastrectomy

Approximately 80% of the stomach is removed laparoscopically to create a small tube-shaped stomach. Food intake decreases and the hunger hormone (ghrelin) drops. It is the most commonly performed bariatric surgery method. A loss of 60–70% of excess weight is targeted.

2. Gastric Bypass (Roux-en-Y)

The stomach is made into a small pouch and a portion of the small intestine is bypassed. Both food intake decreases and nutrient absorption is limited. It is highly effective for Type 2 diabetes. A loss of 70–80% of excess weight is targeted.

3. Gastric Balloon

A silicone balloon is placed in the stomach endoscopically. It is non-surgical and is removed after 6–12 months. It is suitable for patients with a BMI of 30–40 or for pre-surgical preparation. A loss of 10–15% of excess weight is targeted.
